Fractals are symmetrical, repeating geometric patterns that expand or contract infinitely at a controlled rate. The best-known fractal, pictured on the T-shirt, is called the Mandelbrot set, named after the French-American mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot (1924-2010). It is usually depicted horizontally, but if you rotate it upright and give it legs it becomes strangely humanoid.
